A daggertooth pike conger Fish-Man, Hammond ran with the New Fish-Man Pirates before that crew disbanded and served as a supporting villain on Fish-Man Island. He shares Arlong's scorn for humans, handed the Straw Hats a join-or-die choice, and was knocked flat twice for it.
Slim with bright yellow skin, Hammond carries puffy orange hair of middling length above a long, boxy neck and a thin beard. His features turn menacing through a pointed beak-like muzzle, jagged teeth, and dark, glaring eyes. An Arlong Pirates emblem rides near his left shoulder out of devotion to Arlong's creed, while the New Fish-Man Pirates mark sits on the right of his stomach. A black long-sleeved coat and a striped undershirt hang open to show off the ink, worn with frayed white shin-length pants, a mint-green sash, black sandals, a black fedora, and earrings.
Echoing Arlong, Hammond regards humans as a lesser race, and that pride extends to fellow sea creatures, as when he chided Surume for letting Luffy order it about. His conceit comes with a calculating edge: he weighed the Straw Hats' crimes against their kindnesses toward Fish-Men before delivering his ultimatum, and he cast pirates as foes of humanity to be converted or wiped out. He also clearly dreaded, or at least revered, his captain, turning jittery near Hody, and laughs in his own fashion, "Hamo hamo hamo."
Being a Fish-Man, he breathes easily in the depths and possesses ten times a human's strength, greater still underwater, though his actual fighting style went mostly unseen. His tools lean gimmicky: the Utase Ami, a rifle that shoots trawl nets, and the Dorei Tank, a cannon-mounted platform hauled by chained human slaves whom he swaps out without care. In a non-canon episode he once stormed a Fish-Man Island eatery to harangue the Spade Pirates over humanity's faults, only for Ace to fell him with Conqueror's Haki before he could act.
In the canon tale, Hammond, Hyouzou, and Kasagoba intercepted the Straw Hats after they escaped an undersea eruption, with Hammond tallying Luffy's record against the Arlong Pirates and demanding the crew enlist or perish. Luffy turned him down and the Straw Hats rocketed onto Fish-Man Island, sending Hammond to report to Hody, who ordered the pirates captured. He trailed Luffy's group to Mermaid Cove and recounted how Fisher Tiger died after humans refused him blood, the root of the ban on Fish-Men sharing blood with humans.
His bid to net the crew collapsed when Luffy drove the Fish-Men back and tamed a Sea Beast with Conqueror's Haki, leaving Hammond unconscious for Hyouzou to carry. Later, at Gyoncorde Plaza, he rode the Slave Tank until Jinbe had Nico Robin liberate its enslaved bearers, who hurled him down. Robin then snared him with her Devil Fruit clones and broke his back with a Double Clutch, after which he was likely dropped to probationary labor among the lower ranks.
