Fleeing an erupting volcano, the Straw Hats dive into a trench toward Fish-Man Island, survive a rockslide thanks to Usopp, and finally glimpse the island before three fighters serving Hody Jones demand that Luffy bow to their crew.
With a volcano about to blow, both the Sunny and the Flying Dutchman scramble to escape. Vander Decken pulls his crew away, while the kraken Surume carries the Straw Hats clear. When the eruption hits, rising lava heats the water and spawns whirlpools that toss the Flying Dutchman about. Nami directs the ship toward a deep trench that leads down to Fish-Man Island, and Surume dives in just as another burst of magma erupts behind them.
The eruption triggers a rockslide above the ship. Zoro moves to cut a falling boulder until Robin restrains him, warning that the crushing pressure at eight thousand meters would kill him. Usopp instead debuts a new Pop Green, Midori Boshi: Sargasso, sprouting seaweed across the cliff face that snares the tumbling rocks long enough for Surume to slip free. A loose rock still strikes the kraken just over its eyes and dazes it, while the ship comes to rest about ten thousand meters down.
From the trench floor the crew spots a glow above and realizes it is Fish-Man Island, wrapped in a vast air bubble. Sanji, dreaming of mermaids, suffers yet another nosebleed. Before they can find the entrance, six monstrous sea beasts block their path, ridden by figures who declare that pirates are enemies of fish-men. The speaker is a pike-eel fish-man called Hammond, an officer among the New Fish-Man Pirates, and he demands the crew either serve his group or be sunk. Nami orders Franky to refuel for one final Coup de Burst, and as the charge reaches full power, Luffy flatly refuses Hammond's offer.
Usopp shows off a Pop Green that sprouts giant seaweed, and his Kabuto appears to have been upgraded into a new shape. Sanji bleeds yet more from daydreaming about mermaids. The crew gets its very first glimpse of Fish-Man Island. Making their debut as well, the New Fish-Man Pirates arrive, and Hammond, a figure of rank in their ranks, gets a name. A merman is also depicted for the first time in the series. Surume turns out to have been broken in once before, yet Luffy becomes the first person ever to command him. When pressed to submit, Luffy flatly rejects the offer.
Hammond wears the Arlong Pirates' jolly roger as a tattoo, along with another mark featuring a decapitated figure that resembles the Sun Pirates' symbol, later confirmed as the New Fish-Man Pirates' emblem. The chapter title nods to the Jules Verne novel about a voyage twenty thousand leagues beneath the waves. This issue also marks the first occasion, in the manga, that Robin speaks Zoro's name aloud, leaving only Sanji and Brook as crewmates she has yet to address directly.

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
