Hatchan, called Hachi for short, is an octopus fish-man and former officer of the Arlong Pirates who later runs a floating takoyaki stand. Once a major foe of the Straw Hats during the Arlong Park conflict, he reforms and becomes one of their closest allies at Sabaody and Fish-Man Island.
As an octopus fish-man, Hatchan carries eight limbs in total, six arms and two legs, set beneath an octopus-shaped face. His skin is pink and his grey hair forms five spikes, with a second row appearing once he becomes a takoyaki vendor. Suction cups line his six arms, letting him grip walls, and a sun-shaped mark sits on his forehead from his days among the Sun Pirates. Unlike most of his kind he lacks webbed hands, a trait shared only with other octopus fish-men. Standing 220 cm tall, he tends toward heavy garments tailored for octopus fish-men; at Sabaody he hid his extra arms under a jacket and bandaged over his tattoo to dodge capture by slavers.
In his early appearances Hatchan is rather dim and easily fooled, even failing to realize Zoro had cut down his crewmates before cheerfully introducing himself. By the time the Straw Hats meet him again near Sabaody, he comes across as sharper and deeply knowledgeable about the archipelago, and he wisely warns Luffy not to provoke the World Nobles. He grew bitterly ashamed of the harm he and the Arlong crew inflicted on Nami and her village and now strives to make amends. Humble and kindhearted, he repeatedly shielded Camie and Pappag from the Macro Pirates and once restrained Arlong from beating Koala. Though loyal to Arlong as an old friend, Hatchan never personally shared the crew's hatred of humans; his childhood dream was simply acceptance into human society, and unlike Kuroobi and Chew he was never swallowed by Arlong's bigotry.
Trained in the Six Sword Style, Hatchan wields six heavy cutlasses at once, each weighing past 300 kilograms, and claimed to be the second-best swordsman of Fish-Man Island. He is also a powerful swimmer and an exceptional cook, especially of takoyaki. He befriended Kuroobi in childhood and as a teenager rescued Silvers Rayleigh from a sinking ship. He later joined Arlong, whose band merged into Fisher Tiger's Sun Pirates; there he grew close to Koala and grieved when Tiger died. After Arlong was freed and the Sun Pirates split, Hatchan followed Arlong's faction to the East Blue and helped subjugate Cocoyasi Village, seizing Nami after her mother's death. Years later, during the Arlong Park conflict, he clashed with the Straw Hats and dueled Zoro, losing despite his six blades. Arrested with the rest, he alone slipped free of the Marines. Wandering the seafloor afterward, he met Camie and Pappag and opened the floating stand Takoyaki 8. He reunited with the Straw Hats at Sabaody, where Saint Charlos shot him and Luffy struck the noble down in his defense; Rayleigh then rescued the group. Through the timeskip he helped guard the Thousand Sunny until injuries forced him out. At Fish-Man Island, an injured Hatchan tried to dissuade Hody Jones and the New Fish-Man Pirates from their plot, was wounded by Vander Decken's curse, yet still swam back to warn the Straw Hats of the coming attack.
