Overview

This central division of the Marines governs the Grand Line and ranks among the Three Great Powers, sharing that tier with the Four Emperors and, until the SSG's Seraphim took their place, the Sea's Seven Warlords. Anyone posted here counts as a super-elite; a soldier's title at any lesser base is figured to fall roughly three grades short of the same title at the top. Leadership currently operates from New Marineford, seated out in the New World, a relocation carried out under Sakazuki, whereas the original seat lay at Marineford in Paradise.

Role

The former Marineford site was a fortress-shaped stronghold crowned by a tall pagoda-style tower, fronted by a town where officers' families lived and by the Oris Plaza with its execution scaffold; that crescent island could be reached only through the Gates of Justice. Its replacement, raised where the old G-1 base had stood close to the Red Line, towers over the original, wears heavier fortifications and huge side arches, and drifts in Sabaody-like bubbles. Beneath the leadership stretches a web of lettered branch bases across the Grand Line, running from G-1 through G-5 plus G-9 and G-14, joined by the non-canon G-8 and G-F. Usually swamped by Grand Line duties and unable to police the four Blues, the command still intervenes when a matter turns grave enough, as it did in loosing a Buster Call upon Ohara.

Notable Members

For no fewer than twenty-four years the supreme command sat at Marineford, which weathered an early assault by Shiki. Roughly two decades later, Portgas D. Ace was seized and condemned to death, drawing Whitebeard's fury and igniting the Summit War of Marineford; the Marines claimed victory, though the island suffered heavy ruin. Once installed as Fleet Admiral, Sakazuki swapped the sites of the top command and G-1, shifting operations to New Marineford, where he wrestled with the Luffy-Law alliance and with the Levely. In a later scene, Sengoku and Tsuru read there of T Bone's murder and fretted over the Cross Guild's bounties placed on Marines.
