Appearance

In the present day Henzo looks aged and weary, with drooping eyes, a deeply lined face, and a grey bowl cut, his mouth hidden beneath a heavy mustache. His shirt carries a red collar over a lavender body scattered with pink shapes, and a long white lab coat with two pockets goes over it. As a boy he was far brighter in dress, sporting a salmon hoodie with purple pants.

Personality

Even as an unsure child who thought himself weak, Henzo was already a gifted inventor. Like his fellow Pumpkin Pirates, he will gladly stake his life for his friends, a loyalty that also explains the fifty patient years he gave to working under Wetton. With strangers he can come off as careless and brusque, whether telling Usopp to cover his own meal or commandeering the Going Merry without asking.

History

As a youth Henzo played alongside Rapanui Pasqua, Isoka, Akibi, Rongo, and Pukau, all of them dreaming of becoming pirates with his inventions to aid the voyage. The day he finished his Bomb #3, its blast drew his friends to him just as their town caught fire. Fleeing the pursuing Wetton, the group found the harbor's ships destroyed and boarded the only one left, a Wetton Pirates galleon. To save the others, Henzo tackled Wetton overboard into the sea, telling his friends he would catch up, but their ship vanished into the Rainbow Mist.

Decades later, when the Straw Hats reached Ruluka, Henzo questioned Robin and Usopp about a rainbow-colored mist and explained his research over a meal, only for a diner to reveal he served the despised Mayor Wetton. Spotting the returned galleon Tarielishin, he sailed out and, finding the mist near, borrowed the Straw Hats' ship to enter it. Inside the pirate graveyard called Ape's Concert he reunited at last with his unaged friends, though the embittered Rapanui branded him a traitor for working with Wetton, refusing to believe it had all been to free them. As space inside the mist began collapsing, Rapanui sacrificed his own ship to create an escaping gust, and the group burst back out, only to learn that Rapanui had been flung into the past and returned as a powerful Marine officer, still calling himself a Pumpkin Pirate and Henzo's friend. With the ordeal over, Henzo patched up the damaged Going Merry, saw the Straw Hats off, and accepted the townsfolk's plea that they still needed him should the mist ever return.
