Appearance

As a grown man, Rapanui has aged, his messy blond hair framing a face hidden behind black sunglasses, his lips thick and his arms, fairly well muscled, bound in bandages. A Marine officer's coat goes over a black tank top, and rounding out the outfit are green boots paired with long trousers in gray. During his youth he favored a beige vest over a long-sleeved shirt of black and reddish-brown, paired with gray trousers that were cuffed at the bottom.

Personality

Despite holding a Marine post, Rapanui values friendship above strict justice, declining to arrest the Straw Hats even though they are pirates and fabricating flimsy reasons to let them slip away. Bravery defines him, and on more than one occasion he staked his own life for the sake of others, going so far as to offer to destroy his own ship so his friends and the crew could break free of Ape's Concert. As a child he was wary and stubborn, the last of the Pumpkin Pirates to befriend the Straw Hats and reluctant to put faith in any grown-up, even his childhood companion Henzo. His knowledge of the Rainbow Mist is considerable, enough that he authored a ten-volume account of it.

History

Fifty years earlier, a young Rapanui formed the Pumpkin Pirates alongside Henzo, Rongo, Akibi, Pukau, and Isoka, the band of children vowing to seek adventure as a crew. When Wetton set fire to their town, they escaped on the Wetton Pirates' galleon, but Henzo was knocked overboard and the rest were drawn into the Rainbow Mist. Caught inside, they suffered under Ian before getting free of him, and Rapanui came to declare Ape's Concert their new paradise. During his wanderings he came upon the ship his father had once set out on and realized the man had died trapped in the same mist. His fingers hold incredible strength, and his trademark Finger Bomb launches a coin at blistering speed, a technique credited with sinking innumerable pirate vessels and able to demolish a Marine warship in a single blow.

Long afterward, a sleeping Zoro along with Henzo, Robin, Usopp, and Luffy sailed into Ape's Concert, and Rapanui first tried to frighten them off with threats and a fake bomb before retreating. Believing the Straw Hats had seized Pukau, he leapt onto their vessel with sword in hand and was promptly disarmed by Zoro. His distrust of the crew and of the adult Henzo touched off a bitter argument, made worse once he discovered Henzo had aligned himself with Wetton, yet he could not summon the will to strike his old friend and broke down crying instead. A chance collision with Luffy then hurled the two of them far into the mist, where they roamed lost until a vision of his father guided them out.

Returning in the midst of Wetton's invasion, Rapanui aided Luffy against the villain's plots, and as the warping mist threatened everyone, he swam back to blow up his own ship and create the gust the Straw Hats needed to escape. The explosion ejected Rapanui and his friends from the mist but fifty years into the past, where the Marines took them in. The group joined up and rose through the ranks to one day confront Wetton. In the present, after quietly saving several Straw Hats with concealed coin flicks, he at last revealed himself, arrested Wetton over stolen treasure, and renewed his friendship with Henzo. He went on to declare the Straw Hats under arrest too, only to heap up one excuse after another so they could get away, then saluted them as their ship passed by.
