Of slim build and ordinary height, Nami stands out for her ginger hair and brown eyes. The left of her shoulder carries a tattoo pairing a mikan with pinwheels, honoring Genzo, Nojiko, and Bell-mère, chosen to hide the old mark of Arlong's crew. Her body matures gradually across the series and then sharply over the gap, and she swaps hairstyles and outfits constantly, often in tops printed with short four-letter slogans like Gold or EVIL. A Log Pose rides her left wrist beside a gold bracelet from her sister, her skirts tend to carry side rings, and her trademark footwear is a pair of orange high-heeled gladiator sandals. A thigh strap holds the poles of her bo staff, plus her Clima-Tact later on.

Through the early voyage her wardrobe shifts arc by arc, from a striped shirt with an orange miniskirt to desert overalls in Arabasta, heavy winter coats on Drum Island, and lighter swim-and-shorts combinations across Skypiea and Water 7. The timeskip lengthens her hair past the lower back, deepens her hourglass figure, and adds a little height. Her standard New World look joins a green-and-white bikini top with low-rider jeans, orange sandals, pearl earrings, and a belt buckled with a berry symbol that carries her upgraded Sorcery Clima-Tact. Later sagas dress her in kunoichi gear and kimono throughout Wano, an SSG bodysuit on Egghead, and Viking-styled leather with braided hair on Elbaph.

Oda has given her measurements over time, with her stated height climbing from 169 cm before the gap to 170 cm after, while assorted films and filler arcs place her in everything from wedding gowns and circus-tamer costumes to swimsuits and Marine disguises.

What defines Nami above all is her ambition to draw a chart of the entire world, the goal she once declared to Luffy, Zoro, and Usopp. Her attachments show through her keepsakes, from the bracelet she wears for Nojiko to the tattoo she picked to honor her adoptive mother and the man who raised her in spirit. That same intensity surfaced in how she dealt with Arlong's brand, slashing at the hated mark in a rage until Luffy physically stopped her, then having it replaced by a symbol of the people she loves.

Left an orphan as a small child, Nami was taken in beside Nojiko by Bell-mère, who raised the two as sisters in Cocoyasi Village. She later came under Arlong and entered his pirates, then robbed the Straw Hats at their first meeting in a scheme to gather money and reclaim her hometown. Across the Baratie events she played a supporting antagonist, yet after the crew brought down Arlong she joined them sincerely as their navigator. From there her bounty rose alongside the crew's deeds, opening at 16,000,000 berries after the Enies Lobby raid, climbing to 66,000,000 once Dressrosa was behind her, and reaching 366,000,000 in the wake of the Onigashima raid.
