Personality

In keeping with his fellow Phoenix Pirates, Race feels a deep tie to his friends. He holds firm faith that Puzzle is fated to become the Pirate King who comes next, and Vigaro's death left him stunned. His pride runs deep as well, born of the hard struggle he waged to reclaim the crew's Jolly Roger from the Accino Family. Combat sees him wield a sword, and joining forces with his crew, he helped fend off a swarm of Domo penguins.

History

In years past, Race roamed the New World with his crew until a rival ship crushed them, claiming Vigaro's life and wounding Puzzle, which drove them back toward the Grand Line's opening stretch. At Hyokaido the Accino Family took their Jolly Roger; the crew staged Puzzle's death to stop the bounty hunters from tipping off the Marines, only to end up coerced into baiting other crews toward the family.

When the Straw Hats stumbled upon them, the Phoenix Pirates passed themselves off as fishermen who had been robbed. Chopper saw to their wounds and Luffy welcomed them onto the Thousand Sunny, where they answered the hospitality with wine laced to put everyone to sleep. Sanji, Franky, and Robin had merely pretended to nod off and confronted them, prompting Stansen to order the crew to surrender. Luffy decided to tow them along to Hyokaido all the same. Partway there the ships drifted apart, stranding Luffy and Chopper aboard the Phoenix Pirates' vessel, where the crew shared their true story. After Brindo and then Campacino mocked and assaulted them, Luffy, Chopper, and Jiro mounted a counterattack, and Puzzle hauled himself from his sickbed to lead his crew into the fray. Race and the others were hemmed in by Domo penguins and struggled until Puzzle's chain scattered the creatures and rallied them; later they pooled their strength to keep the penguins from dragging off their ship. Once every Accino Family member had fallen and the Jolly Rogers were back, the Phoenix Pirates pointed their ship at the New World in the company of the Straw Hats, only for Campacino to cut them off bent on revenge, sending Race and the crew cheerfully rushing back into battle.
