Scopper Gaban

Old age has lined Gaban's face deeply, his grey hair bunched into a thick ponytail and his chin trailing a braided beard. Behind round black sunglasses sits a scar shaped like a flame above his right eye. While on Elbaph he relaxes in a flowery Hawaiian shirt paired with shorts and dark boots, slipping on a woven kasa and a striped coat any time he heads out.

In his younger years he looked nothing alike: a towering, heavily built figure crowned by long black hair, with two slim strands hanging past his face. The flashbacks swap his attire frequently, ranging from a blue striped shirt at Edd War to colorfully sashed getups, and his scar shows up in some scenes yet is absent in others, so its real chronology stays uncertain.

Gaban has little patience for small talk and tends to drive straight at the point, as when he pressed the crew to put down a rampaging Oden before things worsened. Being a navigator, he has wandered widely, stopping to see old companions like Crocus over at the Twin Cape. His pride in his own power runs deep, and he objects sharply whenever someone ranks him beneath Rayleigh, insisting his place is second strongest in the whole crew.

His later years have brought out a flirtatious, playful side; he introduces himself to Luffy's crew as the Preacher of Love and revels in stirring up trouble and leaking secrets. For all the antics, real tenderness anchors him: he cherishes his partner Ripley and son Colon, looked on Roger's apprentices as sons of his own, and embraced a shame-ridden Shanks to assure him everyone carries a purpose. He also treats Haki as something to be grasped and mastered, chiding Zoro for failing to notice his own Supreme King power.

Celebrated as one of Roger's two strongest wings, Gaban counts among the most formidable pirates ever, reckoned in his prime the equal of Roger and Rayleigh. His weapons of choice are a matched pair of single-edged axes, and a famed exploit had him fell hundreds of foes to guard a recovering Roger, leaving a whole mountain range stripped of life and giving rise to his Mountain-Eater name. Even aged he matches Luffy's pace, pushes the young Emperor into Gear 5, and shears through a giant-scale castle tower with one swing of his Yasotakeru technique.

All three forms of Haki are his to command. His command of Supreme King Haki lets him sheathe his axes in black lightning and even stall the regeneration of the seemingly deathless Knights of God, shown when he cut Shepherd Sommers clean in two. Armament Haki lets him harden his axes or any makeshift object into a weapon, while his Observation Haki extends to the rare Future Vision, which once revealed Colon perishing by Gunko's hand. Serving as Roger's navigator, he drew the crew's last chart to Laugh Tale and shared in the secret of the Void Century.
