Episode 236 stages the duel between Luffy and Usopp over the Going Merry. Wounded but defiant, Usopp throws everything in his arsenal at his captain, who endures the punishment before winning and leaving his old friend behind with the ship.
Usopp returns to Scrap Island at the appointed hour. Luffy warns him to hold no regrets whatever the outcome, and Usopp answers that, unlike past foes, he knows exactly what his captain can do and is ready to beat him. As the rest of the crew watches anxiously, the sniper leans on every trick he owns. He fakes coughing blood to freeze Luffy with worry, then blinds him, pelts him with rotten eggs, and torches his mouth so he tumbles into a bed of caltrops.
Usopp keeps the pressure relentless, firing throwing stars, igniting gas from a Breath Dial, and setting off a blast huge enough to shove the Merry back from shore. Spray from the explosion makes the ship look as if she is weeping. Luffy turns aside Gomu Gomu no Bazooka only to have it caught by an Impact Dial and flung back at him.
Out of gadgets, Usopp stands his ground and takes Gomu Gomu no Bullet square in the chest, which knocks him out and ends the duel. Replacing his straw hat, Luffy tells Usopp the Going Merry is his and bids farewell. Sanji stops Chopper from treating the loser, though Chopper quietly leaves supplies behind. Returning to the ship in tears, Luffy is reminded by Zoro that bearing such weight is the captain's duty.
