Out gathering groceries alongside Chimney and her cat Gonbe, Sanji is steered toward a tiny floating eatery run by a tipsy elderly man. The owner is fast asleep and impossible to rouse, so Sanji starts cooking on his own. When the old chef finally stirs, he instantly reads the cook's knife technique and reveals he once knew Sanji's teacher, the famed Red-Leg Zeff. He presses Sanji to sample his own cooking, and the flavor leaves the young chef stunned and unable to identify what makes it so good. Determined to crack the riddle, Sanji combs the city for unusual seasonings, then bites into one of the man's rice balls and grasps that a special salt is the answer.

The salt at the heart of the dish is a product of Aqua Laguna, the great seasonal flood. When the surge swamps the lower districts of Water 7 and coats the structures in seawater, the sunny days that follow leave behind an unusually flavorful crust of salt on the rooftops. That residue is exactly what the old man harvests for his cooking, and the revelation gives Sanji his answer.
