The Joy of Seeing People! The Gentleman Skeleton's True Identity!

Settled aboard the Thousand Sunny, Brook introduces himself as the man called Dead Bones and again earns a smack from Nami for asking to see Robin's panties. Usopp gathers exorcism gear to drive off the evil spirit, only to be told the spirit is Brook himself. The skeleton, starved for so long, asks for milk, and after a hearty dinner cooked by Sanji he finally explains what he is.

Brook reveals he ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi, a Devil Fruit that resurrected him after death. Once a pirate, he and his crew sailed into the Sea of Devils and were wiped out by a stronger crew. His returning soul could not find his body through the dense fog for a full year, by which point only bones remained. When Nami shows him a mirror, the crew notices he casts no reflection and no shadow and briefly brand him a vampire. Brook clarifies that his missing shadow was stolen, which is why daylight would disintegrate him. Though delighted to be among people again, he declines Luffy's invitation until he recovers his shadow, prompting Luffy to vow he will get it back. As Brook prepares to play music, a Hollow appears and the ship lurches, revealing the looming gate of the wandering ghost island, Thriller Bark.

This Thriller Bark entry debuts the Kage Kage no Mi and the island of Thriller Bark itself. The anime has Brook request milk rather than receive it from Sanji as in the manga, and renders Luffy's nickname for him as Korobokle instead of Koropokkuru. In Brook's flashback, the man running into sunlight is shown with a shadow.
