Ace apologizes for ignoring his crewmates' warnings about pursuing Blackbeard, but they remind him that the captain himself sanctioned the hunt and that they protect their own. While Doflamingo and Moria relish the coming brawl, Mihawk and Hancock keep silent, the latter disgusted by the eager men and praying only for Luffy. Out at sea, the water abruptly pulls back, dragging Luffy's ship away from the gates. Jinbe alone understands the cause and assures a panicking Luffy they will still reach Marineford in time, just before the receding sea surges forward and rockets them ahead, only for a vast shadow to loom over the vessel.

At the fortress, the tide climbs and an enormous wave appears on the horizon, threatening to swallow everything.

Aokiji leaps up and freezes the oncoming tsunami with his Ice Age, then fires ice arrows at Whitebeard, who shatters them and strikes back, breaking Aokiji apart. The admiral reforms and freezes the bay's water, locking the ships in place, but the pirates use the ice as footing and charge. The Marines counterattack, plunging the field into open war with Smoker and Tashigi joining in. Squard rallies his men forward, and the Warlords finally prepare to engage. Mihawk, curious to measure the gulf between himself and Whitebeard, draws his black blade Yoru and sends a slash toward the old captain as the episode closes.

A lettering error leaves the Marine caps reading MARIE or MRINE in places. The anime adds reaction lines from Marines and pirates marveling at Mihawk's reputation as he readies himself, and has Tashigi be the first to identify Flower Sword Vista, whereas the manga withheld Vista's name until his later clash with Mihawk. Whitey Bay, Bastille, Dalmatian, Zodia, and Islewan debut, along with Onigumo's and Dalmatian's Devil Fruits.
