Luffy Becoming an Apprentice?! A Man Who Fought Against the King of the Pirates!

Ace, Sabo, and Luffy track down and capture a Danpa, only for a tiger to steal their prize. Bent on payback, the three strap fish to their backs to bait the beast, but a bear capable of matching the tiger turns up instead. Ace strikes the bear, which rounds on the trio in a fury and chases them, until a former pirate captain named Naguri halts it cold using Haki.

Sabo lets slip that Ace is the offspring of Pirate King Gol D. Roger. When Luffy questions Ace about Roger, Ace bristles at any mention of his father, leading the three to threaten dissolving their brotherhood. Elsewhere, Sabo's father, Outlook III, approaches Bluejam and demands that his son be returned to him. Back at the bandits' hideout, Dadan talks with Dogra and Magra about the looming arrival of the World Noble Jalmack.

This filler episode debuts the anime-original character Naguri, who repels the bear with Haki and claims to have battled Gol D. Roger during his days as a captain. The manga never clarified how Luffy learned Ace was Roger's son, but here Sabo is shown to have known all along and to be the one who told Luffy. An animation slip occurs when Sabo's chipped tooth vanishes as he and Ace yawn early in the episode, only to reappear in later shots. The next-episode preview is trimmed shorter than usual.
