Episode 898 stages the first real clash between the Straw Hat duo and the Beasts Pirates officer Basil Hawkins, who reveals the eerie damage-deflecting power of his Wara Wara no Mi before turning his straw constructs on Komachiyo's fleeing passengers.
Luffy and Zoro come face to face with Basil Hawkins, now serving as one of Kaido's officers. Battle erupts, with Luffy fighting katana in hand, and the pair tear through Hawkins' rank-and-file soldiers. When a massive lizard lunges at Luffy, he hurls the beast at Hawkins, who skewers it on a straw sword. Zoro then sends a flying slash toward the officer, only for one of Hawkins' own underlings to inexplicably take the wound instead.
Hawkins lays bare his Devil Fruit secret: straw effigies sealed within his body, each bound to one of his troops. Any harm directed at him is simply rerouted to a doll, which inflicts the injury on the soldier it represents while Hawkins stays untouched. Proposing a so-called game, he conjures a towering straw figure that looms overhead and draws a tarot card. The result, the Reverse Fool, turns his own men against one another. Komachiyo barrels onto the field and scoops up Zoro and Luffy, carrying them away as Luffy holds off the pursuers. Hawkins counters with a second card, the Reverse Hierophant, which sets his straw monster chasing the escaping group.
The anime stretches the confrontation considerably. Luffy and Zoro linger longer over the Nidai Kitetsu before fighting, Luffy shows sharper swordsmanship than in the manga, and a short scene of Tama remembering Ace is inserted. Zoro is paired against a long-ponytailed foe while Luffy battles a hammer-wielding enemy, and Luffy dodges the lizard's bite multiple times rather than once. When the straw entity is summoned, Zoro merely grins instead of licking his blade, and Luffy carries his scabbard in hand rather than fixing it to his waist. The anime also has Hawkins' men join the chase, whereas only the straw construct pursued in the source manga.
In episode 898, Luffy and Zoro clash with the Beasts Pirates officer Basil Hawkins, who reveals his Wara Wara no Mi power of redirecting damage onto straw effigies linked to his men before summoning a straw monster to chase the pair.
Basil Hawkins is introduced as the Magician in episode 898's title, using tarot cards tied to his Wara Wara no Mi to conjure straw constructs and turn the odds against his opponents.
Hawkins' Wara Wara no Mi seals straw effigies inside his body, each linked to one of his soldiers, so any damage aimed at him is redirected onto a doll and inflicted on that soldier instead, leaving Hawkins unharmed.
Hawkins draws tarot cards to trigger effects: the Reverse Fool turns his own men against each other, and the Reverse Hierophant conjures a towering straw monster to chase Luffy and Zoro.
Komachiyo barrels onto the battlefield and scoops up Luffy and Zoro, carrying them away as Luffy holds off pursuers, though Hawkins sends his straw monster after the fleeing group.
