Oden's Determination! Whitebeard's Test!

Hoping to sail with the Whitebeard Pirates, Oden picks a fight with Whitebeard and is swiftly beaten. The captain turns him away, doubting Oden could ever loyally serve another. Whitebeard then sets a condition: cling to a chain towed by the ship for three full days and a spot is his. Oden comes within an hour of finishing, but the cries of a woman being tormented on a nearby island pull him away from the trial.

Defeated instantly on the shore, Oden asks to join and is rejected because Whitebeard sees him as unfit to follow orders, while Kin'emon objects on grounds of his daimyo duties. Two weeks later, with the Moby Dick repaired, Whitebeard slips away at night to avoid Oden, but Oden sneaks aboard and grabs a chain lashed to the mast. Izou chases after and clings to him; Marco pulls Izou to safety while Oden is left to be battered against rocks. Whitebeard offers the three-day challenge, and Oden rides down a waterfall, gets swallowed by a fish, and is dragged through freezing water. With one hour left and his body swollen from the punishment, he hears Amatsuki Toki being harassed, releases the chain, swims ashore, and drives off her attackers.

Added scenes include Oden studying a map, villagers spotting the pirates, early hostility between the crews, and Oden and Whitebeard drinking together. The Scabbards drag Oden off and lock him in a room after the rejection, and he hears Toki's plight just as he reaches for the chain. The Oden versus Whitebeard fight is extended to end with a quake punch. Toki appears unharmed rather than bruised, and the anime reveals she was beginning to leap into the future before Oden interrupted.
