Overview

Led by their captain Bayan, with Zap serving as a so-called division commander, this pirate outfit fields a large roster built entirely around a musical gimmick. Bayan writes pieces that hypnotize anyone who hears them into blind obedience, a trick the crew intended to turn against Amanda so she would surrender the location of a hidden treasure. That plan never came together, and the entire group was brought down by Luffy's crew.

Their emblem is an ordinary skull without crossbones, given blue hair styled like Bayan's, glaring eyes, and an open mouth that clamps a sideways treble clef among its teeth; the letters BA sit on one side and AN on the other. The main ship is enormous and mounts three trumpets as its figurehead, while Zap sails a smaller red craft of his own, ringed by a blue plate and topped with a golden figurehead, its two sails split between Bayan's flag and, in bold black lettering, the name of Zap.

Role

As with most of the early opponents the Straw Hats run into, the bulk of the Bayan Pirates are ordinary people, and only a pair of them count as real fighters. Bayan himself is unusual in that his captain outranks two capable subordinates yet is weaker in a straight fight, since he depends wholly on his orchestra's mind-controlling music and has no combat skill to fall back on.

Zap fills the muscle role instead, a fairly generic bruiser who leans on raw physical force and weapons to win his scraps. That reliance leaves him exposed against anyone more refined, and more skilled fighters handle him without much trouble. Between a captain who cannot fight and a commander who fights crudely, the crew offered little lasting resistance once the Straw Hats engaged them.

Notable Members

Bayan commands the crew and is its defining figure, controlling enemies through his hypnotic compositions rather than any physical prowess. Beneath him, Zap acts as the crew's enforcer and division commander, a straightforward brawler armed with weapons who carries the group's fighting weight despite outclassing his own captain in battle.

The name Bayan itself references a variety of accordion that originated in Russia during the opening decades of the twentieth century, tying the captain and his whole musically driven crew back to that instrument's heritage.
