Figarland Family

Ranked among the royal houses of the World Nobles, the Figarland Family has repeatedly placed leading figures within the Knights of God and holds one of the five seats on the council of Elders through its patriarch, Figarland Garling. Among the whole line, only one member stands apart from loyalty to the government: Shanks, who chose piracy and climbed to the rank of an Emperor.

The house first appeared beyond the main narrative through a non-canon line spoken by Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro during the movie One Piece Film: Red, where its name and Japanese spelling were confirmed. Inside the family, Garling carries the rank of Supreme Commander of the Knights of God while his son Shamrock ranks as a commander, though Garling's title became uncertain once he rose to the Elders.

The bloodline threads through the upper reaches of the World Government, fusing royal descent with martial command in the Knights of God. Every known member favors the saber as a weapon, and the family's fame has spilled into other adaptations: the live-action series tucks in a nod through a Loguetown district labeled Figarland Square.

What truly defines the house is the diverging destiny of its twin boys. Born a Figarland as Garling's child and Shamrock's younger twin, Shanks was found as an infant during the God Valley Incident 38 years ago, and it was Roger's crew who took him in. That rescue set him on a pirate's course across the Blue Sea instead of the comforts of a Celestial Dragon. Shamrock recounts that Shanks did once return to Mary Geoise, yet in the end he preferred the world below, which brought about his defection.

Figarland Garling heads the family, alongside his son Shamrock, the older twin, and Shanks, the younger. Much of the family's history revolves around God Valley. Forty years ago Garling sailed there, fathered a child with Magnolia, and, learning of the island's wealth, pressed the Elders to stage the next Native Hunting Competition on it. Twelve months later Magnolia delivered twin sons, calling the elder Shamrock and the younger Shanks.

When Garling came back and wounded Magnolia, she handed her infants to Monkey D. Dragon, hoping to keep them beyond their father's grasp. Dragon ran for the coast as the God Valley Incident broke out, but Saint Maffey recovered Shamrock for Garling, leaving Dragon to flee with the unconscious Shanks. Garling later cornered Rocks D. Xebec and executed him personally, an act that earned him recognition as the Champion of God Valley. Years afterward, Shanks briefly rejoined his father and brother while secretly gathering intelligence on the World Nobles, and was named a Devoted Blade.
