Isshi-100

A hundred trained healers compose the Isshi-100, the medical body that cares for the Sakura Kingdom on Drum Island beneath Kureha's direction. Its origin lies with the Isshi-20, a group of twenty physicians who once bowed to Drum's king Wapol, all the way until his reign was toppled for good.

The physicians range in stature and frame, yet every one of them dresses alike: surgical scrubs, gloves, a mask, and dark lenses shrouding them so thoroughly that next to no skin peeks through. Reinforcing the picture, they tend to keep their hands lifted in the overblown stance of a surgeon mid-procedure.

Counted among the ablest healers on Drum Island, the Isshi-20 commanded striking surgical skill. Their trauma team once dragged Wapol back from the brink after a beheading, and the king stayed so unaware that only being told made him grasp it, since the surgeons had not yet wrapped up the work. Their repertoire spanned cutting with a scalpel, suturing wounds, fitting metal plates, and hammering those plates firm. What the swollen Isshi-100 can now accomplish remains to be seen.

The corps took shape amid Wapol's Doctor Hunt, when the king insisted every healer on the island fall under his personal command and either banished or slew any who balked, all so the people would have to plead with him for care and never dare resist. The twenty who yielded became the Isshi-20, leaving them plus Kureha and Hiriluk as the island's last practitioners. Loyal in appearance only, they despised Wapol in secret as the rest did and simply submitted to keep themselves safe.

Kureha leads the corps in its present hundred-strong shape. Its change of heart traces back to Hiriluk. A false report that the Isshi-20 had taken ill was invented to lure him and Kureha to the castle, and Hiriluk went by himself, only to discover the doctors in fine health and see that he had been played. Dying of illness and poison, he ended his own life before them, and his noble death steeled their vow never to surrender hope, driving them to keep sharpening their craft under Wapol's thumb.

When Wapol bolted from a dreaded foe's assault, he dragged the Isshi-20 with him, and afterward, back on Drum, Kuromarimo told the trauma squad to mend him once Dalton had struck him down. Surviving an avalanche the king abandoned them to, the doctors rallied to rescue the gravely hurt Dalton, winning over the doubtful townsfolk and Straw Hat Pirates by confessing their loathing of Wapol. With Wapol beaten, the island pardoned them and took them back as plain citizens of a reborn Sakura Kingdom. Two years later the twenty had swelled into a hundred serving Kureha, flying a fresh banner that pairs a shape like Hiriluk's hat with the cross lifted from Chopper's.
