The Nefertari Family is the royal line that has guided the Arabasta Kingdom for over eight centuries. One of the twenty clans that founded the World Government, they alone refused to leave their homeland for Mary Geoise, and they quietly carry the hidden initial D.
For at least eight hundred years the Nefertari bloodline has reigned over the Arabasta Kingdom, placing it among the twenty royal houses credited with establishing the World Government. The clan guards a secret kept even from many of its own kin: they bear the middle initial D., making them one of the rare families to conceal that mark, and the first ruling monarchy known to hold it. No fewer than twelve Nefertari monarchs have sat the Arabasta throne, and the people remember them as benevolent, with the veteran pirate Brook noting he never once heard of misrule under their watch.
The family's roots reach into the Void Century, when Queen Nefertari D. Lili joined nineteen other sovereigns to forge the World Government. Unlike her peers, Lili declined to abandon her nation and settle in Mary Geoise. She vanished before she could return and resume her rule, and her younger brother took up the crown in her place, carrying the lineage forward. Almost no record of her survives in Arabasta apart from a single letter she penned, passed down through the generations.
Their most turbulent chapter came when Crocodile, then a Warlord and head of Baroque Works, schemed to topple the kingdom from within using Dance Powder and manufactured public outrage against King Cobra. Princess Vivi infiltrated the organization to clear her father's name, fled to the Straw Hat Pirates for safety, and journeyed home to stop a brewing civil war. With Luffy's crew aiding her, she escaped Crocodile's traps and raced to disarm a bomb meant to wipe out both armies at Alubarna. Cobra's innocence was eventually proven, Crocodile fell to Luffy, and afterward Vivi chose to remain a princess rather than sail off as a pirate.
Years later the family departed for the Levely, escorted to Mary Geoise, where Cobra pressed the Five Elders for answers and pushed to abolish the Warlord system. During the Revolutionary Army's raid on the capital, the world's hidden ruler Imu assassinated Cobra, with Sabo wrongly blamed though he had tried to save him. Vivi, briefly seized by CP0, escaped thanks to Wapol and ended up sheltered by the World Economy News Paper while the world reported her missing.
The known present members are the late King Cobra, his deceased wife Titi, and their daughter Vivi, the thirteenth heir to the line. The earliest recorded ancestor is Nefertari D. Lili, the Void Century queen whose disappearance reshaped the succession. The clan's name nods to Nefertari, wife of the pharaoh Ramses II, and a quirk runs through its women, since Vivi, Titi, and Lili all carry names built on repeating syllables ending in the vowel sound "i." The surname itself has been romanized inconsistently across the manga and its translations, alternating between Nefertari and Nefeltari.
