Overview

Kessui, whose name means blood sucker, is the signature weapon of Hannyabal. It takes the form of an odd Japanese halberd fitted with an extra-long spear blade on either end. Each of those tips is in fact a complete katana, hilt and guard included, so the polearm amounts to two swords joined into one. For routine prison duties Hannyabal carries an ordinary pitchfork instead, bringing out Kessui only when a situation calls for it.

Function

With a cutting edge at both ends and considerable length, Kessui grants its user a very wide striking range and serious offensive power. Hannyabal handles it with real skill, and he can whirl the double-bladed shaft fast enough to raise flames through friction, using the heat to fend off attackers. His showcase move, Hannya Carnival: Shonetsu Jigoku Guruma, spins the weapon so that two wheels of fire form at his sides, accompanied by fanfare from his guards. He first turned this blazing technique on Monkey D. Luffy, and various dubs rename it as Inferno Hell Wheel.

Notable Users

Hannyabal is the sole wielder of Kessui. Holding the rank of vice warden at Impel Down, he reserves the twin-bladed naginata for major confrontations, most notably his clash with Luffy during the breakout at the prison, where he debuted its fiery spinning attack.
