A special chapter bundled with the tenth film, Chapter 0 reaches back roughly two decades before Luffy ever set sail. It traces the rivalry of Shiki the Golden Lion with Gol D. Roger and the birth pangs of the pirate era.
Word reaches Marineford that Shiki and his Golden Lion Pirates have crossed paths with Roger's crew out in the New World, prompting Vice Admiral Garp to shove his way aboard Sengoku's vessel and ride along. At the clash known as Edd War, Shiki tries to recruit Roger, hoping the captain's knowledge of an ancient weapon could deliver him the world. Roger turns him down, treasuring his freedom, and a sudden storm devastates much of Shiki's fleet during the fight. A stray piece of a ship's wheel ends up lodged in Shiki's skull as a souvenir of the brawl.
Two years on, Roger has claimed the Grand Line and the Pirate King title, only for his crew to scatter and word to spread that the Marines have taken him. Enraged, Shiki storms headquarters and learns the king will hang in Loguetown to frighten the world's outlaws. The ensuing three-way duel flattens half of Marineford and ends with Shiki dispatched to Impel Down. Roger's public death soon afterward ignites the Golden Age of Piracy, and reactions ripple across the globe.
Shiki later breaks out of Impel Down by severing his own legs to slip free of the seastone shackles, replacing the lost limbs with his twin swords. The escape sends shockwaves through the seas, with Garp catching the news while visiting the infant Ace. The chapter sweeps through dozens of soon-to-be-familiar faces in their early days, among them Shanks recruiting Yasopp, Merry sketching the Going Merry, a young Bell-mère, and Crocus keeping watch over Laboon at Reverse Mountain.
Shiki approaches Whitebeard aboard the Moby Dick with the same recruitment pitch and is rebuffed just as firmly. He withdraws to Merveille in the Grand Line, where his subordinate Dr. Indigo has uncovered a realm of monstrous beasts. Indigo estimates the scheme needs twenty years of groundwork, and Shiki resolves that two decades from now he will show the world a living hell.
The story functions as a prologue to the film One Piece Film: Strong World and was distributed inside the bonus Volume 0, handed free to moviegoers. An original video animation was later produced from its contents. The color spread depicts the Straw Hats, Nami excepted, dressed sharply in black and brandishing firearms. Eagle-eyed readers can spot Pandaman lurking beside Shanks early in the chapter, and a continuity oddity shows wind and waves at Impel Down's gate despite its Calm Belt setting.

When I first decided to commit to watching One Piece seriously, I knew I was embarking on one of anime's longest and most beloved series. With over 100...

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
