Overview

Directed by Munehisa Sakai and scripted by Oda, the film slots between the Thriller Bark and Sabaody chapters, marking Brook's first movie appearance. To honor the anniversary, early theatergoers received Volume 0 of the manga, whose Chapter 0 depicts the long-ago clash between Gol D. Roger and Shiki.

Shiki, an escapee from Impel Down who once stood among the era's greatest pirates, wields the Fuwa Fuwa no Mi to lift inanimate objects free of gravity. His scheme centers on Merveille, a cluster of floating islands where mutated animals are bred into weapons.

Plot

Hearing that East Blue is under attack, the crew decides to head home, but Shiki's flying ship appears and, impressed by Nami's navigation, he abducts her while scattering the rest across his floating islands. On Merveille the Straw Hats battle giant beasts created by Dr. Indigo's SIQ drug, which mutates animals to enormous size and aggression.

Nami escapes with the help of an electric bird Luffy names Billy and reunites with him, while other crew members learn Shiki plans to unleash his beasts on East Blue to force the World Government's surrender. After Shiki defeats the gathered crew, Nami agrees to rejoin him in exchange for sparing her hometown, secretly intending to sabotage the poisonous plants guarding his palace.

The crew storms Shiki's gathering of pirate captains, and Nami lures the islands into an approaching storm. In the final duel Luffy uses Gear 3 to drive his foot into the storm clouds, charging a giant axe with lightning that smashes and electrocutes Shiki into defeat, destroying an entire island. The crew escapes the closing Marines, and the islands fall harmlessly into the sea.

Reception

The film opened strongly, taking in over a billion yen in its first weekend and outgrossing the entire run of the previous movie within two days, helped by the Volume 0 giveaway and Oda's direct involvement.

It was the first One Piece movie written by Oda and the first to carry the Film label, a designation later shared by Z, Gold, and Red. The DVD and Blu-ray release added new scenes at Oda's request showing the fates of Billy, Xiao, and the island's inhabitants.
