Chapter 576

Newly liberated inmates from the lowest cells of Impel Down now stand among Teach's ranks, and once that introduction is done, the two captains turn on each other. Although the darkness fruit smothers the tremor force of the quake fruit, Newgate keeps the edge, telling Teach that no deed of his could ever earn the word son. A remembered scene follows: Roger had once volunteered to share the path to Laugh Tale and the treasure resting there, only to be refused, since wealth held no draw for Newgate. Roger then jokes that the world insists on Gold Roger when his real name carries a hidden D, whose meaning he reveals where the reader cannot hear.

Driving a tremor into Teach at close quarters, the dying captain almost ends him, then speaks in riddles: the man before him is not who Roger awaited, but one fated to carry the inherited resolve of countless eras and hurl the world into a vast conflict. Another memory shows a much younger Newgate confessing to a fellow pirate that riches never tempted him, that a family was all he ever sought. He begs his sons' pardon for handing them the burden of Teach, thanks them, and says farewell. The narration counts off every injury he absorbed, observing that the jolly roger inked on his spine shows not one wound of flight as he expires on his feet.

Each pirate who recently swelled Teach's crew is identified, and the means by which Luffy's group slipped past the Gates of Justice is laid out. Teach explains why he ever wanted a Warlord seat and abandons the post before Sengoku after wringing every advantage from it. Roger is confirmed to have disclosed the meaning of the D, the treasure is verified as genuine, and a global war is foretold for whoever seizes it. Newgate's death marks the second time a major figure dies outside a flashback. The chapter adapts into Episodes 484 and 485.
