Summary

After wiping out every Humandrill, Zoro pleads to be taught, and the groveling disgusts Mihawk, who assumes the swordsman has overestimated himself and wants him gone. That a man aiming to one day surpass him would ask such a thing strikes the Warlord as absurd, yet his attitude shifts once he sees Zoro's motive lies with Luffy rather than personal glory. He agrees to begin the lessons after the wounds heal. Rebandaged, Zoro decodes the tattoo for Perona: the figure first stood for a reunion in three days, since crossed out and rewritten as two years, a message the scattered crew has all received and understood, drawing them back to Sabaody after that span.

The tale then rewinds a few days to Rusukaina, a Calm Belt island where Luffy, Rayleigh, Jinbe, and the Amazon Lily women have come ashore. Jinbe leaves first, trading gratitude with Luffy and pledging to wait at Fish-Man Island. When Hancock offers Luffy food, Rayleigh refuses on his behalf, explaining that the whole reason for landing here is survival training on a place cycling through forty-eight seasons that shift each week. He adds that a civilization once perished here under the harsh climate, and roughly five hundred savage beasts now make the island brutal to conquer.

Key Events

Rayleigh shows off Haki by felling a giant elephant without a touch, then walks through all three forms. Observation Haki, called Mantra on Skypiea, reads a foe's presence and foretells their moves. Armament Haki sheathes the body in force, permits ranged strikes, cancels Devil Fruit powers, and lets one hit a Logia user. Supreme King Haki, the rarest, projects sheer intimidation. Rayleigh sets out to ground Luffy in the basics of all three across two years and let him choose later which to hone. Luffy leaves his vivre card and his straw hat resting on a rock, announcing that he, the pirate known as Straw Hat Luffy, is off on a vacation.

Notes

Mihawk agrees to train Zoro, and Haki gets a fuller breakdown into three categories. Mantra, wielded by Enel and his priests, is confirmed to be the Skypiean label for Observation Haki; Sentomaru turns out to be an Armament user; and the power that once frightened the Lord of the Coast away a decade earlier is revealed as Supreme King Haki. Marking the last chapter both of the arc that follows the war and of the saga bearing its name, this installment closes the first half of the series and brought on the manga's first extended hiatus of four weeks, though Oda personally rested only one. The cover, pairing Edward Newgate with Gol D. Roger, is a rare one carrying no animals.
