ONE PIECE 3D! Trap Coaster is a standalone twelve-minute computer-animated short shown in select Japanese theaters across the winter of 2011 to 2012. It pits the Straw Hats against a clever Marine captain whose island-sized tower of traps tries to capture Luffy.
Conceived as a one-shot 3D attraction, the short places Luffy and his crew up against Captain Trap, a Marine officer billed as one of the force's most inventive minds. Obsessed with capturing the future Pirate King, Trap commands an army of disciplined Kung-Fu Dugongs and a tower packed with elaborate hazards.
The whole piece functions as an extended action set piece, sending the Thousand Sunny careening down a deadly amusement-ride gauntlet that lets each crew member show off a signature technique.
After a Marine ship rams the Sunny and destroys the crew's cola reserves, Trap raises the entire vessel atop a hidden tower and drops it into the mouth of a giant dugong statue, beginning the ride. Luffy smashes through a wheel of spinning blades, then Sanji kicks apart the fists of a punching robot as seawater repeatedly saps the Devil Fruit users.
Zoro deflects volleys of golden harpoons, Nami jolts a groggy Luffy awake, and he bats away a wall of cannon fire with Gomu Gomu no Balloon. When the dugongs swarm the deck, Brook lulls them to sleep, and Robin lowers the falling ship to safety while Luffy punches an escape hole through the tower wall.
A massive slide then drops the crew toward the Giant Nine, a row of club-swinging giants. Franky's loyal dugong disciple arrives with stolen cola barrels, letting Franky launch a Coup de Burst and a Gaon Cannon that topples a giant, collapses the tower, and frees the Sunny to sail off toward the sunrise.
Presented in stereoscopic 3D, the short leaned on spectacle and rapid-fire crew teamwork rather than story, fitting its brief theatrical run.
Its lineup of attacks across the whole crew, capped by Franky's General Franky firepower, served as a showcase reel of the Straw Hats' abilities in motion.
