Rei's Grandfather

This version is a tiny, largely bald old man with grey brows and skin a touch darker than Rei's. His usual dress is the traditional garb of a shrine priest, a pale blue hakama worn over a white robe. The design shares almost nothing with his manga counterpart, making him one of the few cast members whose look was rebuilt from the ground up in the move from page to screen.

On the surface he is a clown, hyperactive and physically demonstrative to a degree that embarrasses Rei, though his antics mesh well with Usagi. He is also famously lecherous, chasing after nearly every young woman who wanders into the shrine, flirting with them, pushing charms and rituals, and framing his intentions as invitations to serve as shrine maidens; he even once tried to wed Ami. Stubborn and prone to overreaction, he digs in his heels whenever he decides he is in the right. Even so, he can snap into a serious mood in an instant. A sharp sixth sense lets him pick up on Zoisite's wicked aura, and on two occasions he holds the villain off with his own spiritual power. He is a formidable martial artist besides, flattening the entire staff of Protect Esthe in a single sweep. For all his roving eye, he balks at the idea of Rei marrying, most likely so she will stay on to tend the shrine.

In a former life during the Silver Millennium, he existed as Jiji, counted among the Seven Great Youma who served the Dark Kingdom, until Queen Serenity had the group reborn as humans on Earth. In that fresh life he took up the mantle of Rei's grandfather and founded Hikawa Shrine in Tokyo, living and working on its grounds.

He debuts in the tenth episode, at once flaunting his lecherous streak. Without realizing it, he hires Jadeite, who is disguised as a shrine hand while advancing the Dark Kingdom's schemes; soon afterward Rei awakens as Sailor Mars, and the shrine becomes the regular meeting ground for the guardians. He later takes on a young man named Yuichiro Kumada, a hiring that only comes about because the removal of his Rainbow Crystal leaves him mentally altered; Yuichiro sticks around all the same. When the Dark Kingdom moves to revive the Seven Great Youma, he briefly reverts to Jiji before Sailor Moon changes him back. A second attempt sees Endymion, corrupted by the enemy, seeking out the same reincarnations to fuse them into a single overwhelming Youma capable of wiping out the guardians. This time he alone slips capture, shielded by the Senshi, and Sailor Mercury smashes the Black Crystal to release the other captives.

Come Sailor Moon R, his skirt chasing has grown so notorious that a magazine warns women off Hikawa Shrine by name. He briefly hangs up his priestly duties to launch a class in 'protection aesthetics,' which draws a large female crowd, until the Black Moon Clan fixes on the location; the guardians break up the plot and he returns to his work as a priest. Because he was a Youma in a past life, Rei technically inherits a quarter of that monstrous ancestry.
