Shadow of Silence: The Pale Glimmer of a Firefly

Setsuna and Chibiusa share a tender moment recalling their time together in the future, a bond the reincarnated Sailor Pluto can now nurture in the present. After Chibiusa leaves, Haruka and Michiru restate their mission to root out the Messiah of Silence before the Death Busters can revive it. Chibiusa then calls on Hotaru but is turned away by Kaolinite, who claims the girl is asleep.

Hotaru is actually awake and, hearing her only friend outside, defies Kaolinite to chase after her despite her fragile health. She suffers a seizure in the street, and when Usagi and Ami arrive they rush her to the hospital run by Ami's mother. Flashbacks reveal the cruel pattern of her life: a dark force wakes during her fits and lashes out at anyone near her, from classmates to a pet goldfish, leaving her friendless until Chibiusa came along.

Refusing an examination on her family's orders, Hotaru accepts a ride home from Haruka. Along the way Mimete's Daimon, U-Tomodachi, attacks a nearby celebrity, and both Uranus and Chibiusa sense it, leaving Hotaru alone in the car to join the fight. As the battle turns, the fleeing Daimon heads straight for the car, where another seizure grips Hotaru. When it strikes at her, a surge of dark power freezes the creature in place, and Uranus arrives just in time to witness Hotaru's glowing eyes before the girl collapses. Sailor Moon then finishes the Daimon with Rainbow Moon Heartache.

Shaken by the power she cannot control, Hotaru warns Chibiusa to stay away and flees. Haruka echoes the warning to Sailor Moon, insisting Chibiusa be kept clear of the strange child, but the inner Guardians rally around Chibiusa, trusting that Hotaru is good at heart. Chibiusa resolves to remain her friend regardless of the risk.

The episode delivers the first on-screen instance of Sailor Uranus reverting to her civilian form, one of the rare times any Senshi de-transforms in view, and the first time Hotaru's power is turned offensively rather than used to heal. It also establishes that Haruka already knows of Hotaru's father, Souichi Tomoe, seeding her growing suspicion that the girl is linked to the Death Busters. In the manga, Hotaru was never brought to the hospital run by Ami's mother; that role fell to Mamoru during the later Dream arc.
