Lip Rod

In the classic animated series, Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna each call upon a Lip Rod to change into their Guardian identities. The Inner Sailor Guardians received their transformation pens and sticks as gifts from Luna or Artemis, but the three outer warriors are different: their Lip Rods materialized on their own at the precise moment each woman truly needed to fight. Haruka's, for instance, first surfaced while a Proto-Daimon was closing in on her.

Every Lip Rod triggers a transformation when its owner speaks her planetary command, whether Uranus Planet Power, Neptune Planet Power, or Pluto Planet Power, followed by Make Up. All three rods share a single design apart from the emblem crowning each one. The shaft is a pale blue stick tipped with a little gold knob, and midway up sits a hot pink heart frame filled with light blue, edged in gold, and topped by a small gold circle that supports the planetary figure.

Those figures set the rods apart. Uranus wears an orb crossed by two rings meeting in a V, rendered in deep admiral blue. Neptune's is a turquoise crescent pierced diagonally by a disc. Pluto carries a heather purple orb flanked by two smaller spheres. A six-pointed gold star bearing the matching planet symbol rests above each figure.

A 2015 Gashapon release reproduced the look closely while tweaking a few details: Pluto's orb turned silver, the heart's interior became a mirror, and the newly transparent pink stick held pull-out fake lipstick worked by the knobs, which were recolored to match each planet and stamped with the outer Senshi's symbols.

The rods belong to Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto. Sailor Saturn stands as the only Outer Guardian shown without a clear transformation tool in the anime, since she is never given a transformation sequence. The label "Lip Rod" itself began as a fan coinage, later embraced by official merchandise, and it grew out of the fact that these three are the only Guardians seen applying lip gloss on screen as they transform.
