Apart

Apart looks like a slim young man in his late teens, standing tall with orange hair whose long bangs are pinned back by an assortment of colored paper clips, rendered pink in the anime. Those clips hold the fringe off sunken eyes drawn black on the page and green on screen. He dresses in a black shirt beneath an olive jacket trimmed with white fur, paired with dark grey trousers and laceless black sneakers. Flashbacks to his earliest years show a barefoot boy in a plain white short-sleeved shirt and shorts.

Order rules Apart to the point of compulsion. He arranges the pieces of the people he kills as neatly as ornaments, and when he noticed that a victim's manga collection was missing one volume, he broke down and rushed out to buy the absent book. Mid-battle with Sakamoto he even stopped to stand fallen figurines back up. He feels no guilt over any of it, and clutter in others genuinely repels him. Beneath the cruelty sits a lonely need to connect, especially with strong people, and he treats his dismembering as proof that everyone is the same underneath. That craving traces back to years of abandonment, so when Sakamoto's group later treats him like an ordinary person, the surprise leaves him shy and even blushing.

Apart grew up an outsider. His mother ignored him so completely that he forgot the sound of her voice, while his kinder but often-absent father tried to teach him that honesty and inner character mattered most, even giving him a doll to practice making friends. After another child branded him a weirdo, the boy took his rage out on that doll with scissors, blades, and needles, and his cruelty soon spread to a small animal he cut apart. When his father recoiled in horror and demanded to know what was wrong with him, Apart killed him too, then concluded from the sight that everyone is identical on the inside and that he was therefore connected to all people. He went on to murder 206 victims before Southeast Asian police caught and condemned him.

Freed from death row alongside fellow killers by Slur, Apart resurfaced in Tokyo and joined the wave of attacks on the city's assassin agencies, slicing a man to pieces with the near-invisible wires that are his trademark, strands that can sever a body or cut through steel in an instant. His rampage collided with Sakamoto at Tokyo Tower, where their brawl spilled from the corridors into the elevator shafts. On learning the killer's ruined past, Sakamoto chose to forgive him and hand him to Granny Miya for rehabilitation. Apart repaid the mercy by exposing the plot linking Kashima, Slur, and the JAA, and he later lost an arm to Slur after stepping in to stop Uda from shooting Shin.
