Gerald Gorey

A single curled lock springs from the front of Gerald's blond hair, which he combs straight back over a retreating hairline. Middle age shows in the creases gathered around his olive green eyes, and a carefully kept goatee frames his mouth on a man of roughly average height.

At work he layers the hospital's standard white coat over a maroon collared shirt, finishing the outfit with black trousers, black shoes, and a brown belt.

Status and reputation govern Gerald's every move. Quick to irritation and obsessed with prestige, he cannot stomach how rapidly Loid wins over staff and patients, nor how close the newcomer appears to Fiona, the coworker he privately adores. Rather than compete honestly, he chalks Loid's success up to good looks or supposed spy tricks and turns to sabotage, eventually going as far as denouncing him to the State Security Service.

His misconduct runs deeper than office rivalry. Gerald has pocketed illicit political donations, padded reimbursement claims, and smuggled hospital supplies out for resale, among other abuses of his office. Yet the arrogance evaporates the moment consequences arrive; caught in his own trap, he panics and begs for mercy. He also flatters himself relentlessly, reading Fiona's curt acknowledgments as budding affection and mistaking covert signals meant for her as excitement over his company. After Loid stages an intervention that spares him from arrest, Gerald warms toward his colleague considerably, though flashes of the old jealousy still surface.

Networking rather than merit carried Gerald to the top medical post at Berlint General Hospital, and he exploited the seat freely: joyrides in a friend's luxury car, dates spent posing as the hospital's CEO, break-room doughnuts devoured and blamed on a heavier subordinate, and medical stock sold to rival institutions. When Loid joined the staff and tried to curry favor with gifts and compliments, Gerald answered the flattery by spitefully withholding VIP patients from him.

His resentment finally boils over. He rewrites a meeting time on Loid's whiteboard, doses his coffee with powerful laxatives, and forges a love letter in his name, but every trick backfires: colleagues excuse Loid's lateness as overwork, his mid-examination bathroom dash inspires a young patient to persevere, and Fiona simply crumples the letter. Desperate, Gerald phones the SSS, brands Loid a spy, and plants fabricated evidence in his desk. The officers who respond are, in truth, Fiona herself alongside Franky Franklin wearing disguises, executing Loid's counterplan. They arrest Loid on cue, then drag Gerald from his hiding spot and reveal him as the accuser, and the forged documents trace straight back to the antique typewriter only Gerald owns. Held at gunpoint by Franky and confronted with a full recital of his hospital misconduct, Gerald is handcuffed, saved only when Loid delivers a speech calling him the hospital's greatest treasure and offers himself up instead. Moved to tears, Gerald thanks him and hands over his VIP caseload.

He resurfaces periodically afterward: arranging a private room for an injured Fiona while she brushes off his attention, briefing Loid on the surprise walk-in of former First Lady Melinda Desmond while quietly planning to shift any blame onto him, and later pointing Fiona toward former director Surjay, whose car still sits in the underground garage during a medical symposium.
