Wyman Wilker

Long sideburns flowing into mutton chops frame Wyman's face, and middle age has thinned his dirty blond hairline considerably. Dark sunglasses are his signature, concealing a pair of eyes that turn genuinely frightening when the cheerful mask slips. At 63, he is rarely glimpsed anywhere but SSS headquarters, dressed in the service's standard uniform.

Outwardly Wyman is a beaming, chummy boss who drags subordinates out for meals and drinks and carries himself with a looseness unusual in a senior SSS official. He barges into conversations theatrically, sulks when brushed aside, and once posed as a pizza deliveryman to crash a weekend gathering nobody had invited him to while dodging public recognition. The staff still tread carefully around him; office rumor holds that after the staff left him out of a New Year's party, he once ran his agents through an exhausting spy hunt.

The clowning covers a serious operator. Wyman opposes WISE and every form of Westalian interference without compromise, shows real perception during investigations, and treats politically sensitive business touching foreign intelligence or Garden with deliberate caution. A cynical streak surfaces in private, as when he quietly ridicules the Shopkeeper's loyalty to the vanished empire as an attachment to the past.

Wyman scouted Yuri Briar into the SSS himself, explaining his choice only by comparing the young man to an endearing puppy, and his favoritism has been obvious ever since: constant praise, check-ins, and dinner invitations that lead Yuri's peers to call him the director's pet. He approved of Yuri's declared ambition to capture Twilight and later celebrated him as the first person ever to strike the spy in combat.

As director he issues emergency summons, assigns field operations, and manages delicate investigations. During the Wheeler affair he engineered a mole hunt by feeding the communications division conflicting versions of the signal Wheeler would use to identify himself; once the impostor echoed a planted detail, Jeffrey stood exposed as WISE's informant. Wyman also serves as the government's point of contact with Garden through the Shopkeeper, keeping their dealings cordial while staying wary of the organization's reach and arguing from a pragmatist's view of the state against the Shopkeeper's older ideals. His identity emerged in pieces: colleagues knew him only as Boss, Chief, or Director until his surname surfaced in Chapter 115 and his full name in Chapter 135, during an SSS gathering where he unknowingly badgered Twilight himself, pushing pizza on the spy's civilian identity, Loid Forger.
