Chapter 11

Math class at Eden Academy opens the chapter, with Anya confidently declaring an answer of three-thirds and being told she is entirely wrong. Elsewhere in the city, Loid meets Handler, who relays HQ's expectation of roughly eight Stella Stars within four months. He claims that poses no problem while privately calculating that Anya could rack up eight Tonitrus Bolts in half that span. Handler also warns him that an informant was seized at city hall that morning and that the enemy's crackdown makes the capital, and Eden within it, dangerous ground.

At Berlint City Hall, Millie tells Yor and Sharon that their coworker Jim Hayward was hauled off by the SSS on espionage charges for peddling official papers on the black market. Camilla then asks Yor whether her brother knows about the marriage yet, and Yor realizes with horror that a full year has passed without telling Yuri, who will be phoning the office that very day. Her coworkers coo over a photo of the cute younger brother, though his clinginess gives Millie pause.

In an SSS interrogation room, a lieutenant burns a cigarette out on Hayward's hand before handing the session to Yuri, whom colleagues dismiss as a mascot the boss finds puppy-cute. Yuri disarms the prisoner by rambling about his sister's marriage, then produces photographs of the document handoff he had neglected to submit as evidence. Hayward folds, admitting he copied papers for cash and knows only that his client came from the West. When pressed about Twilight and the man jokes about wanting money for women, Yuri slams his face into the table, declaring the difference between them: unlike Jim, he cherishes his family and would do whatever it takes to guard the nation his sister calls home.

At home, Anya nails a fractions question when Loid frames it around Bondman's pistol, teaching him that she learns through vivid scenarios. Yor bursts in announcing Yuri's congratulatory visit that night, so the couple deploys their prepared "loving newlyweds" set, complete with a shared bed that leaves them both flustered when Anya asks if a kiss is coming. Anya falls asleep before the guest arrives. Yuri skips toward the apartment with a bouquet, an old rib injury from one of Yor's childhood hugs flaring up, and vows to eliminate any threat to his sister, spouse included, while hiding his secret-police side from her. The door opens on mutual welcomes, Loid and Yuri each concealing a dark glare.

Handler sets the Stella quota at about eight stars in four months and reports the arrest of a WISE informant at city hall. Yuri Briar is revealed to work for the SSS, extracting a confession from Jim Hayward that ties the document sales to a Western client, and his hatred of Twilight surfaces. His violent turn against Hayward exposes the fanatic beneath the sweet younger brother.

Yor finally must tell Yuri about her year-old marriage, forcing the Forgers to dress their apartment as a lovey-dovey household. The chapter ends with Yuri at the door, he and Loid masking their hostility.
