Chapter 105

Franky Franklin's morning begins violently when his own alarm invention, the Abso-waker Type-J, nearly does him in at one of his Berlint hideouts. Undeterred, he tinkers with a multi-armed productivity rig called Senju while banned records spin in the background. It explodes in his face, which he shrugs off as the cost of experimentation. At his tobacco shop, a regular turns down his invitation to a date, then Fiona Frost sweeps in demanding a forged document within a week, backing the deadline with a jail threat.

Loid calls next, roping Franky into watching Anya and Bond. He grumbles, plays with them anyway, and consoles himself with the payment, which he promptly gambles away at the racetrack. There he meets a teller who doubles as an informant, learning that a route he needs has gone dark because the SSS arrested its source, Latchkey Lachy. The teller hands him two movie tickets as consolation. Franky runs into an acquaintance named Priscilla on the street and, to his amazement, she accepts his movie invitation.

Mid-daydream about the date, Franky gets word that the SSS has raided the teller himself. He cancels the film but keeps the dinner reservation, then storms the holding site in a gas mask, firing a bouquet that doubles as sneeze-inducing smoke bombs. Gadgets, a punching gauntlet, and his mastery of the city's streets let him spring the teller and several other captured informants. He makes his dinner on time, only for Priscilla to reveal she took another man to the movie and is now dating him. Walking home crushed, Franky is startled by the teller's party popper, an ill-timed congratulations on a girlfriend he never got. The two settle on seeing a movie together instead, discover it is a romance drama, and quietly call it a night.

Fiona Frost commissions a forgery from Franky, her first appearance since recovering from her injuries. Loid hires Franky to babysit Anya and Bond. The SSS captures Latchkey Lachy and then raids the racetrack teller, prompting Franky to mount a solo rescue with his homemade gadgets, freeing the teller and other informants.

Priscilla, Mrs. Mills, Suzanne, and the racetrack teller all debut, and the actress Rachel makes her first on-screen appearance. Franky's romantic hopes collapse when Priscilla reveals she has a boyfriend.

This 24-page chapter belongs to Volume 15 and the Term Break Arc, releasing September 16, 2024, with Franky alone on the cover. His hideout is decked out in Japanese touches, from the furniture to a clock modeled on a single foliot lantern design, and the Abso-waker even sports a pair of tiny sumo wrestlers alongside a mechanized samurai figure.
