Summary

Months ahead of the forest mission, Matthew McMahon starts his day feeding Keekee, hanging the laundry, and taking out the garbage before Maureen sends him off with a packed lunch. At Berlint City Hall, his coworker Dominic admires the meal, compares it to Camilla's cooking, wonders whether his nimble boss can cook too, and passes along Millie's grumbling about the fancy food waiting for Matthew aboard the Princess Lorelei.

At home, cutting up a small bird for Keekee's dinner stirs memories of the lives Matthew has taken. Before leaving for the cruise, he persuades a reluctant Maureen, who is disgusted by the crow's diet, to handle its feeding while he is gone, having already prepared the meals himself. In exchange she demands plenty of souvenirs. That night he mulls over what she might like and tells himself he must survive the trip to deliver them.

With the shipboard job finished, Matthew reports to the Shopkeeper, turns down a dinner invitation, and heads straight home. The bandage across his face alarms Maureen, who suggests retirement, but he intends to keep working for as long as Garden wants him. Over the dinner she cooks, he compliments her food, and she reminds him about those souvenirs.
