Short Mission 2

Franky announces to Loid that he is in love. Loid wishes him luck and starts walking off, turning back only when Franky jokes about selling him out to the Secret Police, a threat that earns a murderous glare. Franky smooths things over by promising a smaller listening device in exchange for romantic help. Over coffee he names the woman: Monica McBride, who works at a cigar club on Fifth Street, then rattles off a dossier of personal details he has collected on her. Loid's disappointed look prompts Franky to point out that Loid investigates people too, and Loid fires back that doing so is his job. Asked why he even needs help with this much intel in hand, Franky loudly whispers that gathering information and analyzing it are entirely different skills, and his talent ends at gathering.

Loid drafts a sprawling flowchart of conversation branches for Franky to memorize, which gets rejected as too complicated. His offer to sit behind Monica and feed hand signals dies too, since Franky refuses to let him overhear the conversation. They settle on rehearsal: Loid throws together a Monica disguise and runs a practice date with him. Satisfied, Franky marches off to the cigar club while Loid privately expects disaster. After Monica's greeting, Franky stumbles through his invitation.

Meanwhile the Forgers are out on a walk, with Anya eyeing a playground obstacle course, when they spot Franky across the street. He relays Monica's excuse for turning down a date along with her vague promise of a movie someday, then mutters that a drink sounds good. Anya, catching his true feelings through telepathy, pats him in pity and startles him. Franky later sobs at a bar over being shot down before he could even finish asking, and Loid shows up, sheepishly buying him an expensive drink. Loid observes that men in their line of work cannot afford feelings for others, advice Franky finds rich coming from someone with a wife and daughter. Loid answers that his family is part of the mission. Franky vows to get drunk on Loid's tab, and Loid decides to join him.

Monica McBride makes her debut. Franky secures Loid's help through the promise of improved spy gear and rehearses a date with Loid disguised as Monica.

Monica turns Franky down, Anya senses his heartbreak on the street, and Loid consoles him at the bar while insisting his own family exists for the mission.

Short Mission 2 is a nine-page extra chapter of Tatsuya Endo's SPY x FAMILY manga, numbered 18.1 in Volume 4 and released on December 30, 2019; Episode 16 adapts it, and Franky and Loid share the cover. Franky's opening remark about Loid winning Yor over on a recent date likely points back to Extra Mission 2, which precedes this chapter. Wanting Monica to look cute, Endo referenced Miku Kanemura of the idol group Hinatazaka46 for her design.
