Koharu Utsumi

Onlookers considered Koharu a lovely young woman. Her dark eyes matched her long black hair, which fell in a center part down either side of her face. She tended to dress in flowing gowns, and a frail, sickly air often clung to her.

Gentle on the surface, Koharu carried a deep inner conflict about living as a ghoul. She cared for her father even as he fed her, yet his deeds tore at her conscience until she began leaving traces that would ultimately unmask her. Choosing to shoulder the blame for his killings herself, she preserved the victims' remains and belongings in carefully arranged boxes so that the truth of their fates could one day come to light.

Orphaned near the age of ten when investigators wiped out the Noyama family, Koharu was placed with the affluent businessman Yuujirou Utsumi through an arrangement made by her older brother, who hoped to reach the man's fortune. Raised in that household, she and her brother were drawn into abducting and killing young women across the 8th Ward.

Not long after Aogiri Tree's assault on Cochlea, Koharu left a hair clip belonging to her latest victim near a police station, and the fluids on it pulled the CCG into the case. She first meets Amon by chance, giving directions to a lost newcomer, and their encounters multiply from there. She brings him homemade cupcakes, listens to his views on ghouls, and slowly opens up about her murdered family, thanking him for the courage his words give her.

Eventually Koharu abducts Toujou to bait Amon and Kyouhei Morimine to her father's mansion. There she reveals her true nature, fights briefly, and is defeated. With her final breath she again thanks Amon and voices hope that his dream may someday be realized, then points the investigators toward a storeroom holding the possessions and remains of the many girls lost from the ward over nearly two decades. As a ghoul, her ukaku kagune took the shape of thin, dragonfly-like wings, delicate and poorly suited to fighting, and she ran out of stamina before landing any real blow.
