The underground expeditions form a recurring set of specialized missions run by handpicked teams of gifted ghoul investigators. All of them unfold beneath Tokyo's 24th Ward, a sprawling labyrinth hidden below the city.

While untangling the maze itself counts as one aim, a large share of the work amounts to a grim game of whack-a-mole against the ghouls dwelling there. Once each outing wraps, the charts drawn of its routes are gathered and stored in a dedicated reference room. Kishou Arima, a Special Class investigator, held a key managerial hand over these operations.
