Chapter 65

Ken Kaneki presses on against Yamori while Iwao Kuroiwa frets over Juuzou Suzuya facing the man called Jason. Kuroiwa explains that ghouls who feed on their own species grow warped kagune that fuse to their bodies, since cannibalism swells their Rc cell count and triggers the strange mutation. Because Jason is notorious for such feeding, Kuroiwa reasons that he must have formed a kakuja.

Yukinori Shinohara looks back on a battle a decade earlier against the kakuja known as the One-Eyed Owl, fought beside Kureo Mado and Fujishige Iba. They stood alongside Kishou Arima, then only a Rank 2 investigator, and every Special Class officer in that fight lost their life. Elsewhere, masked members of Aogiri Tree flee the pursuing doves, one asking after Yamori's location. A companion points to the hobby room at the rear of building five. At that moment Touka Kirishima, Renji Yomo, Nishiki Nishio, Shuu Tsukiyama, and Uta emerge and cut down the fleeing ghoul.

Kuroiwa explains how cannibalism produces a kakuja through raised Rc cells and concludes that Jason has one. Shinohara recalls the deadly clash with the One-Eyed Owl ten years earlier that killed every Special Class investigator present. The Anteiku group ambushes an Aogiri ghoul and learns Yamori is likely in building five.

This Volume 7 chapter shares its title, Kakuja (赫者), with the very transformation it describes. Several figures, including the One-Eyed Owl, Kishou Arima, Kureo Mado, and Fujishige Iba, appear only through mention or memory.
