Chapter 67

Locked in the cell Yamori abandoned them in, Kazuichi Banjou and his masked companions worry over whether Kei, Kouto, and Ken Kaneki have survived. Banjou dwells on his own frailty for failing to shield them. Footsteps interrupt his thoughts, the cell wall shatters, and Kaneki steps out of the settling dust. When Jiro asks about Kei and Kouto, Kaneki admits he lacked the strength to save them, yet he swears he will never allow such a loss again and will guard everyone.

The noises Hinami Fueguchi and Kaya Irimi had been tracking fall silent, and Hinami suspects Kaneki is the source. After praising her skill, Yoshimura asks Irimi for a report on the other buildings, then decides to depart. Irimi questions the move, but he replies that they need more time and that Renji Yomo's group can handle Kaneki.

Yomo's team keeps hunting for Kaneki while warning that the CCG and Aogiri battle still rages nearby. Lost in a memory of Kaneki, Touka drifts and misses the investigators ahead, forcing Yomo to cover her. Facing a large body of officers, Yomo sends Nishiki Nishio and Touka Kirishima down another route while he, Uta, and Shuu Tsukiyama break through. The two soon run into Ayato Kirishima, who strikes at them without pause and wounds Nishiki.

Kaneki frees Banjou's group, confesses he could not save Kei and Kouto, and pledges to protect everyone from now on. Yoshimura withdraws and entrusts Kaneki's recovery to Yomo. Yomo splits the search party, sending Touka and Nishiki along a separate path where Ayato ambushes and injures Nishiki.

Under the title Conscience (呵責, Kashaku), this Volume 7 chapter shifts the rescue effort toward Kaneki. Kei and Kouto are only referenced, having been lost during the earlier confrontation.
