Chapter 70

While Ayato Kirishima consumes Touka Kirishima's unfinished wing, she slips into memories of their early years with their father, Arata Kirishima. Out with his children, and despite their ghoul nature, Arata accepts a meal prepared by Satou and teaches the young siblings that surviving in the human world means acting as humans do. On another occasion the family discovers an injured sparrow and takes it in, with Arata building a birdhouse while Ayato and Touka gather insects to feed it.

A bandaged Arata remarks how much Touka resembles her mother. Cooking for Oguchi, he lays out his hopes for them: Touka is to guide Ayato, and Ayato is to support his sister whenever she needs it. After dark he slips out to scavenge for food and is glimpsed by Yukinori Shinohara and Kureo Mado, who note how gaunt he looks.

Back in the present, Touka lies bruised and beaten on the ground, crying out for her father.

Touka's childhood surfaces as Ayato feeds on her kagune. Arata teaches the siblings to blend in with humans, cares for an injured sparrow alongside them, and asks Touka and Ayato to look after each other. Investigators Shinohara and Mado spot the starving Arata scavenging at night. In the present, a battered Touka calls for her father.

Named Sister and Brother (姉弟, Kyōdai), this Volume 8 chapter grounds the siblings' conflict in their shared past. The story Arata reads to them is the 1932 Japanese tale Gon, the Little Fox (Gongitsune) by Nankichi Niimi.
