Summary

April opens with the CCG's promotion ceremony. Sasaki, the Quinx Squad, and many of their colleagues move up in rank, and Tooru Mutsuki earns the rare distinction of a double promotion. Only Matsuri Washuu and Juuzou Suzuya climb all the way to Special Class, and Sasaki marvels that Suzuya has reached that tier at twenty-two, matching the age Kishou Arima once did. A banquet follows, where Sasaki and Akira Mado exchange praise and he coaxes her into a startling embrace. Takeomi Kuroiwa congratulates Kuki Urie, who takes the words stiffly, privately unsatisfied despite the recognition, and grows quietly disgusted when Takeomi's father, Iwao, pats his shoulder.

Ginshi Shirazu and Mutsuki admire Kuroiwa's easy charm until Sasaki interrupts to report that Shirazu's new quinque, drawn from Nutcracker, is nearly complete. Alone with Sasaki later, Akira presses him about Hinami Fueguchi and reminds him that his ownership rights over her will soon lapse, so he must decide her fate. Washing his face afterward, Sasaki reflects on the strain: Hinami stands accused in the death of Akira's father, Kureo Mado, and only his custody holds Akira back. Even so, he keeps preserving the girl for the sake of "Kaneki."

A sharp pain behind his eyes triggers hazy flashbacks, including a glimpse of Touka Kirishima in disguise, visions that have grown more common since the auction raid. The projection of "Kaneki" then appears and describes their bond as two beings sharing one body, likening himself to a cordyceps fungus that hollows out its host until only a shell remains. He warns that they cannot last together, since every recovered memory erodes Sasaki's own identity.

At the Tsukiyama Estate, Kanae von Rosewald tends the garden and recalls his childhood. After ghoul investigators wiped out his family back in Germany, he alone survived and was taken into the household, where the wary staff whispered about the newcomer. A young Shuu Tsukiyama befriended the shy boy, led him to the estate's roses, and gave him a German bloom called a Duftwolke, telling him to live proudly and beautifully like the flower. In the present, Shuu lies bedridden and in pain, his body sealed inside his own kagune, and Kanae weeps for him.
