Summary

Shirazu wakes screaming from a nightmare in which his father, hanging from the ceiling, begs him to die, and a decomposing Nutcracker crawls into the dream still hungry to be beautiful. Mutsuki and Saiko Yonebayashi come to check on him, though Saiko only wonders aloud whether he has wet the bed. At the CCG Main Office, Sasaki and the Quinx wait in a conference room for a briefing. When Shirazu asks why he was left out of the earlier meeting, he learns Matsuri Washuu had judged Rank 2 investigators and below unworthy of the details. The gathering targets the Rosewald family, code-named Rose, suspected of mass abductions.

Kijima and Furuta arrive, followed by the Hirako Squad, though Take Hirako is absent, and Kuramoto Itou grows evasive when Sasaki asks about him, awkwardly inviting Sasaki out for drinks instead. Once the Shimoguchi Squad and Koori Ui's group arrive, Ui walks everyone through the investigation's obstacles: Rose is disciplined and leaves almost no trail. Afterward Hairu Ihei approaches the Quinx, and they are startled to learn she became an investigator at sixteen and now works beside Special Class Ui, having even fought alongside Arima in the Owl Suppression Operation. Urie bristles at the presence of someone so gifted.

Elsewhere, Matsuri meets Itsuki Marude and explains that the S1 Squad will lead the Rose case, along with methods he studied in Germany against Aogiri Tree. After Matsuri needles Bureau Director Yoshitoki Washuu and departs, Marude reflects on the Washuu clan's long line of talented investigators while disliking Matsuri's approach.

Sasaki takes Shirazu to collect his new quinque from Dr. Kouitsu Chigyou, who is thrilled by so rare a natural chimera weapon. Urged to test it, Shirazu recalls Nutcracker's final words and vomits, then steps outside for air. Sasaki joins him, and Shirazu deflects any suggestion that the quinque troubles him, instead asking whether Nutcracker's 1.7 million bounty counts as large. Sasaki cannot say. At the Tsukiyama Estate, Chie Hori meets Kanae in the garden and voices concern about Shuu's condition and its danger to the family, which only angers him. When she suggests he could serve some other house, Kanae bursts into tears, insisting no one but Shuu is worth serving, and Chie leaves him rattled with the idea that the whole Tsukiyama family might vanish.
