Summary

Kanae wanders the Tsukiyama mansion in a daze, still turning over Chie Hori's words about abandoning the family for the sake of Shuu. Head of the house Mirumo Tsukiyama snaps him out of it by sending him to fetch wine, and along the way Kanae dismisses Chie's suggestion as human nonsense, feeling too indebted to Mirumo, who took him in after he lost everyone, to ever betray the family. He remembers his younger years as a new servant, when he disliked Mirumo at first. In one memory, sent out with an umbrella on a rainy day and singing a German song along the way, he spots Shuu in the downpour and is struck by his beauty, only to freeze when he sees Chie there too. Watching Shuu banter easily with a human fills the boy with jealousy.

His thoughts break when a feverish Aliza rushes into the wine room: something is wrong with Shuu, and Matsumae is away harvesting. Kanae hurries to Shuu's room to find the other servants unable to calm their thrashing master. Shuu attacks them, raving about being the Gourmet and craving only food worthy of his palate, until Kanae pierces him with his kagune, giving the others time to drug and restrain him. When Shuu wakes calm in bed with no memory of the outburst, Kanae tells him they were merely tidying the room, and Shuu thanks everyone, especially Kanae, who begins to sob.

Overwhelmed, Kanae later flees the house, repeating the word "hass," German for hate, until he collides with a tree and rams his head against it again and again before collapsing. He dwells on everything he hates, including Chie, Ken Kaneki, Haise Sasaki, and even his own loyalty. In a secluded spot, Nimura Furuta staggers about feigning drunkenness until Matsumae's harvesting party appears, at which point Shiki Kijima, Taishi Fura, and other investigators close in. Realizing it is a trap, Matsumae raises a kagune wall so the group can flee, but Hairu Ihei shatters it effortlessly and blocks their escape. At HySy ArtMask Studio, Uta is listening to music at his canvas when a knock comes: Sasaki has stopped by for a visit, and Uta invites him in.
