:re Chapter 36

Over drinks, Kuramoto Itou tells Sasaki that his squad leader, Take Hirako, has transferred, leaving Itou to head what is now the Itou Squad, a role he feels unsuited for. Hirako has joined the Arima Squad, since Ui's move to lead S1 left Arima needing a new assistant, and everyone welcomed the reunion of the two men. Itou remains anxious about the Rose case, and Sasaki, uncertain himself, resolves to be supportive. Alone afterward, Sasaki worries that his Quinx Squad cannot keep pace with the elites of S1 and wonders whether their special abilities might prove useful. Spotting his mask, he recalls visiting Uta at HySy ArtMask Studio, marveling at the masks on display and asking about the eye-patch mask, which Uta made as a gift for a regular customer, and about "The Hanged Man's MacGuffin" book, which Uta denied sending. Told his eyes were merely tattooed, Sasaki left with his questions answered but no closer to the truth, keeping the mask and asking whether Uta makes custom pieces.

At a ghoul detention center, a Rose member is held while Kijima considers how best to interrogate him. Hairu Ihei sulks over being denied the ownership rights despite doing the most work, and Fura scolds her complaining even as he privately admits her frightening talent. Back at the ambush site, Matsumae is stunned that Ihei broke her kagune wall, and her every attack is dodged with ease before Ihei severs her kagune. A second wall lets Matsumae's allies strike through the gaps, but Ihei deflects them all with astonishing speed and wounds Matsumae even at point-blank range. During the chaos, Kijima captures one of the Rose ghouls and mockingly thanks Ihei, while Matsumae slips away.

Ihei, still annoyed, admits she hoped to earn praise from Arima, who praises no one, and vows to become worthier than Sasaki and Ui. Fura reveals Kijima's old nickname, "Kijima the Chipper," from his days as a Cochlea interrogator, and Ihei notes he has been "chipped" himself. Certain the captive Yuuma is too loyal to talk, Kijima decides to send his comrades a "present" and asks where best to leave it. At the estate, a bedridden Matsumae tries to apologize to Mirumo, who waves it off, and Aliza runs off crying when she asks after Yuuma. Sitting beside Matsumae, Kanae senses Chie's warning coming true and asks whether she would choose Shuu or the family, only for Matsumae to unsettle him by asking who exactly his master is. In the city, Shirazu, Saiko, and Takeomi Kuroiwa commute together and stop at a bakery, where they find Yoriko Kosaka working, someone Takeomi already knows.

Take Hirako transfers to the Arima Squad, reuniting the pair, while Itou inherits leadership of his former squad. Hairu Ihei overpowers Matsumae, showcasing elite speed and reflexes as Kijima captures the Rose ghoul Yuuma. Kijima plans to bait Rose by sending Yuuma's comrades a message. Kanae is pressed to choose between Shuu and the wider Tsukiyama family.

The chapter appears in Volume 4 of Tokyo Ghoul:re under the Japanese title Futo. It reintroduces Yoriko Kosaka through her connection to Takeomi Kuroiwa, seeding a thread that ties the Quinx investigators to characters from the original series.
