:re Chapter 39

In a CCG conference room, Ui challenges Kijima over the torture video, which civilians were able to view. Kijima notes it drew heavy traffic and that he has since restricted access, assuming Rose has already seen it. Warned about the risks of using himself as bait, he shrugs that he places little value on his own life and knows his conduct violates the countermeasure law, promising to see Ui again if his tribunal does not remove him from the team. Ui calls him a maniac. Nearby, civilians murmur about the disturbing footage, and when Urie and Mutsuki overhear, Urie dismisses it as idle gawking. At the Chateau, Shirazu asks whether Haise saw the video, and Haise, who did, calls Kijima's methods entirely wrong, missing Shirazu's muttered doubt about why it matters when ghouls are killed regardless.

At the Tsukiyama estate, Shuu blames himself for Yuuma's capture and worries over a distraught Aliza. Judging it unwise to do as Kijima wants, he decides to rescue Yuuma alone. In the garden, Kanae serves him tea and asks his plan, and Shuu explains that the key is to restore Kaneki's memories and enlist his help, since Kaneki now works as an investigator and would surely never choose that life willingly. Kanae is glad to see Shuu energized yet uneasy about whether it can work. He phones Chie Hori, who tells him to give Shuu the second picture before hanging up abruptly, leaving Kanae puzzled but resolved to put Shuu's wishes first.

Later, Shuu joins Haise, who is reading beneath a tree in a park, and steers the talk toward books, aware of Kaneki's love of them and of the author Sen Takatsuki. Shuu boasts a knack for guessing favorite writers and names Takatsuki, but Haise startles him by describing her stories as heartbreaking because her important characters always die, sensing beneath her polished prose a despair that longs to destroy everything. Thrown off, Shuu recovers and asks to discuss books again before Saiko interrupts, having spent time at a game center with Mutsuki. Haise apologizes and leaves, and Shuu reaches after him in vain. Trailing the group in disguise, Shuu complains that the Quinx keep him from proper conversation, and Kanae, explaining that investigators work in teams, shows him the second photo, a missing-person poster of Kaneki that Hide once put up. Shuu believes it could restore Kaneki's memory and muses about the friends Kaneki left behind. Meanwhile investigators chase Chie, wanted for photographing and aiding ghoul hunts and hacking CCG servers, but she evades them, grabs a backpack, and flees, wondering if Kanae can carry out the rescue. In the kitchen, Kanae studies a rose, then meets with hooded Aogiri Tree members, holds up a stack of cash, and tells them he has a job.

Kijima defends his lawless broadcast and dares his superiors to remove him. Shuu commits to rescuing Yuuma by restoring Kaneki's memories rather than obeying Kijima's demand. Haise unknowingly reveals a deep reading of Sen Takatsuki, unsettling Shuu. Chie Hori escapes her CCG pursuers, and Kanae secretly hires Aogiri ghouls for a plan of his own.

The chapter appears in Volume 4 of Tokyo Ghoul:re under the Japanese title Shinsen. The second photograph Kanae obtains is drawn from the original Tokyo Ghoul, the missing-person poster of Kaneki that Hide put up in that series.
