Summary

While the Quinx investigate Rose, Urie recognizes Kanae from the auction, and the sighting signals the hired Aogiri Tree ghouls to prepare. Kanae leads Urie and Shirazu into a parking structure, and just as they believe him cornered, he turns and attacks. The White Suits cut off Haise, Mutsuki, and Saiko, who had been following behind. Hooguro dismisses the investigators as weak children and questions why so many members were brought, and Shousei answers that the job is important. Haise orders Mutsuki and Saiko to reinforce Shirazu and Urie.

Their path is blocked instead by Torso, and Mutsuki fights him as Torso, unnerving in his fixation, marvels that his opponent has grown much stronger before being wounded by Mutsuki's knives. Grave Robber intervenes to protect Torso, and Mutsuki observes, as Sasaki had said, that she wields a quinque rather than a kagune. A flashback shows Kanae on a rooftop briefing Shousei, Hooguro, Torso, and Grave Robber that their task is to eliminate the Quinx, promising to double their pay for each one killed.

Back in the present, Shirazu realizes his kakuhou is being targeted, and though Urie tells him to use his quinque, the haunting memory of Nutcracker keeps him from drawing it. Judging Shirazu useless, Urie attacks Kanae alone, overwhelming him, seizing his neck, and slamming him against an exterior column. A status update places Urie and Shirazu against Kanae on the fifth floor, Mutsuki against Grave Robber across the third and fourth, and Sasaki against the White Suits on the second, while Saiko waits in reserve behind the building. Just as she wonders whether it was right to leave Mutsuki as he asked, Shikorae appears.
