Snorri

Snorri is a newborn crowned with a thick head of light hair. Because winter greets his birth, Gudrid keeps him swaddled in a heavy blanket cinched shut with rope. His cheeks carry the same rosy flush seen in his mother and in his uncle Otto.

As an infant, Snorri has no personality yet drawn out on the page; his part in the story is symbolic rather than active. He embodies the future Thorfinn has spent the saga fighting toward, a child born in peace on new land, far from the wars that shaped his father's youth.

In the late summer of 1023, Thorfinn, Gudrid, and their companions gather for a spur-of-the-moment picnic to sample bread made from Hild's latest invention. Gudrid seizes the moment to reveal she is expecting, promising Thorfinn the child will arrive before the year is out. As her time nears, she thanks Cordelia for her care and muses over names, settling on Cordelia for a girl but leaving a boy's name for Thorfinn to choose on his return.

Labour comes in late November, roughly ten days ahead of schedule, and the village women gather to help. The birth unfolds under threat: Ga'aoqi and his warriors descend on the village and press toward Thorfinn's home, only for Cordelia to bar the door with her own body, absorbing several arrows and refusing to give way even as the newborn's first cries ring out. Soon after, with an Lnu army closing in, the settlers evacuate the women and children by ship to an island to the northeast, and Gudrid departs carrying Karli and the baby. Thorfinn finally meets his son when the remaining settlers rejoin the group, lifting the child high as he holds him for the very first time. His name never appears in the manga itself; it is drawn from an official French storyboard booklet, and it echoes his historical namesake, held to be the first European born in the Americas outside Greenland.
