Personality

Playful and warmhearted, Luca holds her nerve even in wretched conditions, determined never to become like the people she scorns. To her four young wards, Pepe, Fouquet, Lucie, and above all Nina, she is a mother figure who demands they earn their keep yet gives them true tenderness. She extends that same guardianship to Casca, aware the addled woman can scarcely protect herself, and her devotion runs so deep that she will risk death to give the others a shot at living.

Optimistic though she is, she quietly wonders whether such kindness makes her foolish. Skeptical by habit, she withholds her trust from Jerome and Guts until each proves his word, and her sensitivity to others' suffering lets her pity even the egg-shaped apostle. Her runaway imagination once led her to take the Skull Knight for Death itself.

History

When plague reaches her village, Luca flees with the other Midlanders toward Albion, joining the refugees camped around the Tower of Conviction. On the road she takes in the defenseless Casca, dubs her Elaine, and wraps her face in cloth to keep predators from noticing her beauty; four more girls also come under her protection. To endure, the women sell themselves, and Luca's cleverness lets her little group live in comfort while neighbors starve, since she has the girls hand out their earnings to the needy around them and so avoids the jealousy that might have alerted the Holy See. Jerome, one of the Holy Iron Chain Knights and heir to a wealthy noble house, grows smitten with her during those days.

Once Albion falls, she resettles in Falconia with her former companions and takes charge of the temporary lodgings for incoming refugees, assigning rooms and letting the old and the families claim the ground floor first.
