Goku, Bulma, and Oolong approach Fire Mountain, only to discover that the "beautiful sunset" they were admiring is actually a castle surrounded by eternal flames. The Ox-King, a towering giant said to kill anyone who approaches his treasure, spots Bulma and Oolong first and prepares to destroy them. When Goku returns from a failed attempt to breach the flames (burning his tail in the process), the Ox-King charges at him too.

Goku escapes on the Flying Nimbus, circling the giant until he is dizzy. The Ox-King stops fighting immediately, stunned. Only one person ever possessed that cloud: Master Roshi, his former teacher. He realizes Goku must be connected to his old training partner, Grandpa Gohan, and the two were like brothers. The fearsome warlord breaks down and begs Goku for help. He needs the Bansho Fan from Master Roshi to extinguish the flames. He also reveals that he sent his daughter Chi-Chi to retrieve it, but she has not returned.

Meanwhile, Yamcha and Puar had encountered Chi-Chi earlier. A young girl fleeing a dinosaur, she decapitated the beast with a blade on her helmet and nearly did the same to Yamcha. He knocked her unconscious in self-defense, and when Goku arrives looking for her, Yamcha panics and pretends to be her admirer to avoid the Ox-King's wrath. Goku collects Chi-Chi, and the two ride the Flying Nimbus toward Kame House. During the flight, Yamcha overhears Goku reveal a critical weakness: pulling his tail drains all of his strength. Chi-Chi, despite Goku's oblivious behavior, develops an instant crush on him.

Chi-Chi's entrance is unforgettable. She screams while running from a T-Rex, then calmly beheads it with a helmet blade and vaporizes the remains with a laser beam. This girl is no damsel. Her brief scrap with Yamcha further cements her as a fighter in her own right, even at a young age.

The Ox-King's emotional turn is the episode's most surprising moment. What begins as a terrifying encounter with a giant who kills trespassers becomes a tearful reunion by proxy, as the Ox-King connects Goku to his beloved training partner Gohan. Goku's tail weakness is also revealed here, a piece of intelligence that Yamcha files away for future use.

Chi-Chi's debut is far more significant than it appears. The girl who falls for Goku in this episode will eventually become his wife and the mother of Gohan and Goten. The revelation that Grandpa Gohan and the Ox-King trained together under Master Roshi deepens the martial arts lineage that structures the entire Dragon Ball universe. Goku's tail weakness, casually mentioned here, will become a decisive factor in battles throughout the original series.
